It’s time to fire yourself. Seriously.
Terry Ramsey, Founder and CEO of Bookkeeping Match Up, isn’t joking. It’s about time you fired yourself as the bookkeeper for your business and found the perfect bookkeeping match.
From Noodles to Numbers
Terry never planned on becoming the CEO of a rapidly growing matchmaking service—but life had other plans. What started as a need to manage her own books for Red Rabbit Ramen, a homemade ramen shop she opened with her husband, turned into a full-time bookkeeping business she started on her own, Ptero Bookkeeping.
“I came up with the idea of a bookkeeping matchup because it is so hard to grow organically yourself as your own bookkeeping business. I just knew that this is something that would benefit bookkeepers, but also help make the process easier for business owners that needed the service.”
This realization planted a seed that grew into Bookkeeping Match Up, a platform designed to simplify the process of finding the right bookkeeper for every unique small business—at no cost to the business owner.
The goal? Make it easier for both parties to find their perfect match.
Creating a Win-Win Solution
Being a business owner of any kind is straight up difficult. Finding someone who understands your industry, fits your budget, and matches your personality (this last point is key according to Terry) can be a time-consuming and frustrating task.
Terry also saw the challenges from the other side—how difficult it is for bookkeepers to organically grow their client base.
“It’s important for you to pick up the right clients, not just because you want to grow big and grow fast,” Terry warns. “The most powerful thing a bookkeeper can do is say no to clients who aren’t the right fit. That power means that you have the power to grow your bookkeeping business in the direction that you have envisioned for yourself.”
A Matchmaker You Can Trust
Four years as a middle school principal allowed Terry to create a data-driven and customer-centric business model for Bookkeeping Match Up. (Side note: being a principal doesn’t mean sitting in an office with your feet up until a student gets sent to you for shooting spitballs. Being a principal does mean collecting outrageous amounts of data all year long while keeping thousands of kiddos, parents, and teachers from having meltdowns all day, every day, among about a million other things).
Needless to say, feedback from business owners and bookkeepers is continuously gathered to refine service.
“I’m always checking in with both sides, asking, ‘What can I do better?’ I make sure that it’s serving both sides because I am the matchmaker, the go-between to make sure that both sides feel that they’re getting value in the end.”
As a small business owner herself, you can be sure your business, whether it’s on the bookkeeping side or the business owner side, is in excellent hands.
“I’ve done both sides. I am not coming from just the bookkeeping business side. I’m coming from being an entrepreneur. I’ve done the joys and I’ve done the pain of being a business owner. I’m trying to make sure that they have services that are really going to serve to see results in their business.”
Beyond the Brand: A CEO Who Values Balance
Many business owners start their businesses because they want more freedom in their life outside of a corporate environment, and Terry is no exception. She’s crafted her life and her company around her family.
“I love business. I love business talk. I’m very passionate about this business because I get to connect with more entrepreneurs. It’s not just about crunching numbers—it’s about building relationships and understanding the unique challenges and triumphs of other business owners.”
To Terry, business is personal, flexible, and deeply connected to the people behind the brands. It’s this philosophy that drives her success and makes Bookkeeping MatchUp a trusted ally for both business owners and bookkeepers alike.
“I think that we are as a society going away from expectations of what it means to go to work or work remotely. And as a business owner myself, I’m defining that. So it’s made balance easier.”
And no one would know this better than Terry. She’s walked the tightrope of building a business while managing a family, and she’s candid about the internal struggles that come with it.
“You’re always your biggest critic,” she admits, reflecting on the constant pressure to push forward, even when things seem to be running smoothly.
“Once you get the moment to breathe, it’s a beautiful thing,” she says, “It means you have some things flowing and going, but we’re our own worst enemy because you’re always trying to do that next step.”
So, for the other entrepreneurs out there wondering how to combat the need to constantly be in motion while you balance business and life? Time management.
“I’m very thankful for the time management skills that I learned throughout leadership. And it’s still one of my favorite topics to talk to other people about today,” she shares.
Manage your time like a pro—embrace the chaos, and don’t forget to breathe. A good bookkeeper can help with that.
